A colonoscopy is a procedure performed by a doctor and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Medications will be given into your vein to make you fall asleep. During a colonoscopy, the doctor uses a long, flexible, tubular instrument about 1/2-inch in diameter called a colonoscope that transmits an image of the lining of the colon. The colonoscope is inserted into the rectum and advanced along your large intestine.
Because you are asleep, you won't feel any pain during the procedure. The colonoscope is slowly withdrawn while the lining of your bowel is carefully examined. When the procedure is completed, the colonoscope is removed before you wake up.
During the colonoscopy, if the doctor sees something that may be abnormal, small amounts of tissue can be removed for analysis (called a biopsy), and abnormal growths, or polyps, can be identified and completely removed. In most cases, colonoscopies allow accurate diagnosis and treatment without the need for a major operation.
Certain prescription medications need to be stopped prior to your procedure. You will be notified by the surgery scheduling team or the GI nurses from the hospital on what needs to be held. Please be aware that if certain medications are not stopped prior to your procedure this could result in the procedure being rescheduled. Please make your provider aware of all the medications that you take.
Once the procedure is completed you will be informed when it is safe to resume these medications.
Please plan on having a driver on the day of your procedure.
You will need to stop eating foods that are high in fiber. Examples of these foods are corn, nuts, seeds, popcorn, and fruits and vegetables with the skin.
Please discontinue taking multivitamins, iron, herbal or homeopathic supplements.
You will need to be on a clear liquid diet the entire day before your procedure. NO SOLID FOOD. Please review and follow your colon prep instructions from Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology. These instructions are found inside the box from GiftHealth. DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PREP BOX.
If you are prescribed a 2 day prep, please follow Rocky Mountain Gastroenterology’s enclosed instructions.
After your colonoscopy:
Read your discharge instructions carefully. Certain medications, such as blood-thinning agents, may need to be avoided temporarily if biopsies were taken or polyps were removed.
